Seismic Isolation of Nuclear Power Plants
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper presents the world state-of-the-art of the Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) provided with seismic isolation and focuses on the main problems related to the application of this technology to so peculiar structures, characterized by high masses, large sizes and severe safety requirements due to the possibility of relevant accidents with release of radioactivity and other extremely dangerous materials. Difficulties in the application of seismic isolation to NPPs are mainly due to the lack of specific standards and to the need of manufacturing quite large isolators (and test them in extreme multidirectional dynamic conditions), and using interface components, like pipe expansion joints for hot and pressurized pipelines, capable of absorbing the large relative displacements which occur between the isolated nuclear island and the ground during the seismic attack.

Evolution of Seismic Design of Structures, Systems and Components of Nuclear Power Plants
Safety of the personnel of a nuclear power plant (NPP) and the environment around the plant should be ensured against all natural hazards including earthquakes. With public safety as the paramount concern, NPP facilities are designed to withstand low-probability, high-magnitude earthquakes. In this paper, details are discussed regarding the evolution of seismic analysis and design aspects of nu...

Japan is in a seismically active area and experiences many damaging earthquakes with loss of life. In 1995, the Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake caused major destruction in Kobe City and in 2011 the Great Eastern Japan earthquake and tsunami caused major destruction in the Pacific coast areas of northeastern Japan. Additionally, recent relatively less destructive earthquakes include the 2003 Tokachi-O...

Experience of the March 11 2011, Great Tohoku earthquake clearly demonstrated that the earthquakes might be the dominating contributors to the overall risk of nuclear power plants (Institute of Nuclear Power Operations [INPO], 2011); International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA], 2007). The seismic probabilistic safety assessments of several nuclear power plants also provided similar results. On th...
متن کاملSuggested Changes to the non-conservative low frequency criteria for the seismic design spectrum used in intraplate regions
The shape and the amplitude of the design spectrum are critical to the safe design of structures. This paper presents suggested changes to the shape constraints for the design spectrum in the 0.5 to 3 Hz range for large intraplate earthquakes. The main recommendation arises because of the impact on a large pulse loading within an intraplate earthquake with a frequency of 1 to 2 Hertz. Newmark a...
متن کاملApplicability of Monte Carlo Method with Different Sampling Techniques for Seismic Safety Evaluation of Nuclear Power Plants
Fault-tree and Event-tree analysis is widely utilized in safety engineering and is almost exclusively relied upon in Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) for nuclear power plants (NPPs). In this approach, Binary Decision Diagram (BDD), which can obtain exact solutions in theory, was introduced as an alternative for a traditional approximation method, namely Minimal Cut Set (MCS) method. Howeve...
